The Glade Creek Grist Mill is a new mill that was completed in 1976 at Babcock.  Fully operable, this mill was built as a re-creation of one which once ground grain on Glade Creek long before Babcock became a state park.  Known as Cooper’s Mill, it stood on the present location of the park’s administration building parking lot. Birds in Winter

Since it’s about 10 deg about 0 with the wind chill factor I seem to have some problem going outside. So, I spent Saturday morning sitting in my kitchen at my sliding glass doors watching the birds line up for some free seed. They need an easy meal when the snow is a few inches deep and I need some nice photos. I figure it’s a pretty good deal for all involved.

I only have one photo ready to post right now and will try to get some others up soon if anyone would like to see them. Today I am posting a pic of a couple Northern Blue Jays. With seed on the deck birds are lining up all over the railings and chairs in pecking order. Some a little more territourial than others.

The camera, a Canon 60D, Lens is Canon 55-250mm 5.6 on tripod. Shutter speed 1/1600sec. ISO 1600 Flash did not fire. I didn’t use a shutter release cable but most times I do. I originally posted that I used a Canon 300mm 2.8 but after checking the metadata I found I was mistaken.

Canon 300 2.8 lens at high school football game

In this shoot I used a Canon 60D with 300mm 2.8 Canon Lens to the side lines for some action shots. A manfrotto monopod helped hold this beast of a lens for me. ISO setting at 1600 with f2.8 and shutter speed of 1/320 sec for most of the shots. This lens does not have IS. I feel it is a great lens for the night with stadium lights. I would also like to use it for some wildlife shots. I’m pretty sure the results will be satisfactory.

1st Test Canon 60D video

I’m just trying the HD Video on the Canon 60D and showing two very short clips. This is the first time I have activated the HD 1080 Video on the Canon 60D. It looks nice and I have played it back on my 1080I LED tv at home. These two videos were shot from a carbon fiber tripod that has a manfrot grip that is intended for cameras and not paning for video.
The sound is also very good. For an on camera mic it sure does pick up sound from anything around. I have ordered an external mic and will share that test asap.

Art show is a big hit

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

This week I attended a friends art show opening at Kent States East Liverpool, Ohio branch. Craig Wetzel art was displayed in the Mary Patterson Building. I would like to share some cell phone images with other art fans. You can visit Craig Wetzel site to learn about his work. Craigs art will be on display from Oct. 6th thru the 18 2011.
This event was a big hit with the locals as well as local news papers. Some art was for sale and other are private collection pieces. I for one see craig Wetzel as a modern day Hans Hacker. Please take the time to visit his blog.

How to get started in HDR photography

I’m just going to give you a basic idea on how to get started and what you may need to do this type of work. If some people are interested I can post more on this subject.

I have been shooting High Dynamic Range photography for over seven years. This type of shooting is also known as HDR. What it takes to create this type of image is multiple exposres. One correct, one over exposed and one under exposed image. Yes, three shots of the same scene or subject. There is a issue of weather you need three or more shots. Some people seem to think you need five, seven or even nine. Three will work just fine although, I myself have gotten stunning results with more. Trust me you will do just fine with three.
Some people think they can take ONE SHOT HDRs. THese are no way the real HDR images. Just fakes and many times they look fine. You’ll always fine someone somewhere trying to cheat the system for shortcuts in any arena. Maybe they just do’t own tripods. I don’t know!
Yes now that I have brought up the subject of tripods this is one of the most important items you will need. You may of thought about that when I mensioned multiple exposers. I also like to use a shutter release cable. Imagine that ! Another item nobody wants to buy.
The software you will need to create you HDR images can be done with Photoshop and many other programs can be found online. SOme are free and some can be purchased for instant download.
Picturenaut is free among others. I am not affiliated with photoshop or picturenaut I just use these names as examples of software that is good for this work.
Once you have the needed software and the three images you will learn about creating your HDR image in the program. You’ll want to overdue it at first. THat’s what happens when people are new to HDR. Back off and don’t over saturate the image. Also watch for ghosting. A big problem for many people new and experienced. I have seen many people doing HDR for year and there’s even a one page add in a major magazine that offers to teach you to o HDR for a large fee that shows the instructors examples with very heavy ghosting. Ghosting is a halo around builings or cars where the edges may meet the sky. I’ll show an example here today.

Below I have added an example of a hand help HDR I took this summer. Three braketed shots. Yes, no tipod. I wanted to walk freely around town and shoot hand held. THis is my first hand eld HDR and Like I always knew, it wouldn;t turn out good. When zoomed in the are many areas that show triple edges that do not line up because it was not shot STILL on a triopod.

My goal here is more to talk about what not to do than like others who talk about how it’t done and leave out all the what to look out for if you want a good picture.

You can find some of my work on Flickr I’m know as thatstickerguy

Red Trillium as art

Today I am posting a recent image of the wildflower trillium. The flower grows in many colors. Hight not much more than seven inches. This photo has been reworked to give it an artistic style looking to some friends as if it had been painted. It’s a photo I took a couple weeks ago. I flet like doing some photoshoping on wednesday and this is the final result. I made many adjustment to the original image and added a layer of texture. I like the end results. Thanks for stoping by. I’ll add something new asap. Tony

I offer a few prints on my site and will try to add more very soon.
